The Feeding of Nations - Redefining Food Security for the 21st Century (Paperback): Mark Gibson The Feeding of Nations - Redefining Food Security for the 21st Century (Paperback)
Mark Gibson
R1,626 Discovery Miles 16 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the last decade, the world has grown richer and produced more food than ever before. Yet in that same period, hunger has increased and 925 million remain underfed and malnourished. Exploring this troubling paradox, The Feeding of Nations: Re-Defining Food Security for the 21st Century offers a glimpse into how the simple aspiration of global food security has evolved and unfolded-with sometimes contradictory and counterproductive policies, agendas, and ideologies. Providing a holistic analysis of the issues surrounding food security, this volume engages in a cross-disciplinary approach that makes the subject accessible to readers and academically rigorous in delivery. Topics discussed include: A brief overview of our current understanding of the prevalence of hunger and malnutrition Historical perspectives on the feeding of nations, to understand how we arrived at this point Contemporary motivations that led to the creation of the modern concept of food security The many different sectors related to food security, including agriculture, environment, and policy The goals that society has set regarding food security, the means by which these are to be achieved, and current thoughts on solutions The book contains a broad set of appendices that enable focused study on critical topics presented in the text. Uniquely amalgamating all the disparate elements of food security into one volume, it sets the record straight about the origins and evolution of the phenomenon while dispelling myths along the way.

Culture and Power - A History of Cultural Studies (Hardcover): Mark Gibson Culture and Power - A History of Cultural Studies (Hardcover)
Mark Gibson
R5,121 Discovery Miles 51 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Power has long been a central preoccupation of social and cultural analysis. "Culture and Power" focuses on power to shape a history of Cultural Studies. A critical analysis of the nature and purpose of Cultural Studies, the book assesses the development of the discipline from the work of Michel Foucault in post-war France and the Birmingham Centre for Cultural Studies in the 1970s to the expansion of the field in the United States and present day concerns with culture, politics and ethics. As Cultural Studies has shifted, the concept of power has changed and become more problematic. Moving on from the celebrated "culture wars" - and battles over language, objective knowledge and disciplinary values and meanings - "Culture and Power" unravels the social, ideological and political knots bound up in the concept of power. In doing so, the book charts not only the history but also the possible future of Cultural Studies.

Tony Moore, Mark Gibson, Chris McAuliffe, Maura Edmond
R3,545 Discovery Miles 35 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on dozens of original interviews and close analysis of Australian examples sampled from across 40 years of “indie” music, comedy, film, computer games, and graphic design, Fringe to Famous explores how some of Australia’s leading cultural practitioners negotiate their position between the margins and the mainstream in the contemporary period. Fringe to Famous critically re-examines the relations between “independent” and “mainstream” cultural production at a time when the very meaning and relevance of those terms is being widely debated. In recent decades, critically-aware artists and their entrepreneurial business partners have engaged in a playful negotiation of marginal and mainstream tastes, harnessing the values associated with the creative underground—transgression, independence, authenticity—for both aesthetic and commercial ends. At the same time, crises in the business models of commercial media industries and the proliferation of online distribution have made “mainstream” increasingly difficult to define.

Romance Phonetics and Phonology (Hardcover): Mark Gibson, Juana Gil Romance Phonetics and Phonology (Hardcover)
Mark Gibson, Juana Gil
R4,051 Discovery Miles 40 510 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This volume explores several recurring topics in Romance phonetics and phonology, with a special focus on the segment, syllable, word, and phrase levels of analysis. An international team of experts and junior researchers present research that ranges from the low-level mechanical processes involved in speech production and perception to high-level representation and computation, based on data from across the Romance language family, including from varieties that are less widely studied. The book is divided into five parts. In the first, chapters present acoustic studies, examining topics such as Italian anaphonesis and voiceless fricative sibilants in Galician, while chapters in part two turn to articulatory studies of features including three-consonant onsets in Romanian and rhotic variation in Tuscan Italian. The focus of the third part is perception, and includes studies of perceived phrasing in French and perceptual cues for individual voice quality, while part four examines phonological issues such as Galician mid-vowel reduction and sibilant voicing in Spanish. Chapters in the final part of the volume look at the effects of production and perception on issues in language acquisition. The book draws on a range of experimental and methodological approaches and will be of interest not only to scholars of Romance linguistics but also to all those working in phonetics and phonology from graduate level upwards.

The Beat Stops Here - Lessons on and off the Podium for Today's Conductor (Paperback): Mark Gibson The Beat Stops Here - Lessons on and off the Podium for Today's Conductor (Paperback)
Mark Gibson
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In The Beat Stops Here: Lessons on and off the Podium for Today's Conductor, master conductor Mark Gibson addresses the technique of conducting as an extension of intimate knowledge of the score to the hands and arms. He employs a variety of everyday activities and motions (brushing the dog, Tinkerbelle, the "door knob") to describe the physical aspects of the role. He advocates a comprehensive, detailed approach to score study, addressing major works bar-by-bar in terms of both musical analysis and conducting method. Finally, Gibson explores the various roles a conductor plays, as a teacher, a scholar and a member of the musical community. His writing is highly focused, with an occasionally tongue-in-cheek, discussing everything from motivic development in Brahms to how to hold a knife and fork in public. In short, The Beat Stops Here is a compendium of style and substance in the real world of today's conductor.
